At the International Motor Show in Geneva, Audi AG presented the racecar for the DTM 2013 – the Audi RS 5 DTM. The driver line-up for the new DTM season is also fixed. The technical specification of the DTM cars was ‘frozen’ in accordance with the regulations as the checkered flag fell at the last race of the 2012 season. Audi unveiled the S3 ‘Sportback’- the five-door version of the S3. It gets a 2.0-litre TFSI petrol engine pushing out 300bhp and 280lb ft of torque, driven through Audi’s permanent quattro system, via a six-speed manual gearbox or six-speed S tronic auto.
The S3 Sportback has a curb weight of 1,445kg (3,186 lb), a reduction of 70kg (154 lb) over the previous model. The S3 3-door tips the scales at 1,395 kilograms (3,075 lb). Read the rest of this entry
Audi reaffirmed last week it is going to launch piloted cars before the decade ends.
Rupert Stadler, Audi CEO, said in a speech: “We are assuming that a series-built vehicle with a piloted driving function will be technically feasible this decade.”
He also indicated that the ball is now firmly in the court of policymakers and lawmakers, who will have to accelerate the formation of legislation regarding responsibility and liability for piloted driving technology, which is a bigger stumbling block than the costs of or levels of technology involved in delivering the systems. Executives told during the CES convention Tuesday that Audi cars are stuffed with technology, with electronics making up “90% of innovations” at the German automaker.
And now Audi is trying to develop a self-driving car. The company said it has developed a laser scanning system that will be able to create 3-D maps of a vehicle’s surrounding, allowing computers to guide the car around obstacles.
A prototype shown at Tuesday’s talk is much smaller than the bulkier towers being outfitted on the tops of other driverless test cars. Read the rest of this entry
